International Day of Clean Energy: Building a Sustainable Future for Everyone

January 26th marks the International Day of Clean Energy, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly as a call for a just and inclusive transition to clean energy for the benefit of people and the planet.

Today, clean energy has become one of the most crucial elements in combating climate change and eradicating poverty. According to the UN, approximately 685 million people still lack access to electricity, with over 80 percent of them living in sub-Saharan African countries.

The absence of reliable energy supply hinders the development of education, healthcare, and economy in vulnerable communities. Furthermore, 1.8 billion people rely on dangerous and inefficient cooking systems using firewood and dung, which causes 3.2 million premature deaths annually.

Renewable energy sources — sun, wind, water, waste, and geothermal heat — offer unlimited opportunities for all countries worldwide. Unlike fossil fuels, these sources emit virtually no greenhouse gases and are naturally replenished.

Investments in clean energy deliver economic results: every dollar invested in renewable energy creates three times more jobs than fossil fuel investments.

Key Facts:

  • More than 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from burning fossil fuels for energy
  • Renewable energy creates more jobs than traditional energy sources
  • Improving energy efficiency can save millions of lives

The International Day of Clean Energy is a reminder that the transition to sustainable energy is not only an environmental necessity but also an opportunity to ensure the well-being of all humanity.
